シリーズでお送りします。今回は名前についてです。

My legal name is John, but “John” can be changed into different names. It can be changed into “Johnny” or “Jack”. I have no idea how Jack was created from John, though.

A “Y”-sound can be given to Jack and it becomes “Jackie”. Nobody has ever called me “Jack” or “Jackie”, but if I wanted to, I could start using one of those names. I have one more option. I can use “Jay” because it sounds like my first

initial: J.

Middle names are legal in the U.S., where I am from. It is not necessary to have one, but most Americans I know do.Middle names are a good way for parents to show respect to others.

For example, an American woman I know has Marie as her middle name. That’s because her mother’s mother’s first name was Marie. A man I know has Edward as his middle name. Edward was the first name of his father’s best friend.

I have an old friend from America and his first name is Robert. That is his official or legal name. In English-speaking countries, shortening the name of a child is common.

Robert can be shortened to “Rob”. First letters can be switched, so Rob then can become “Bob”. Adding a “y” to a boy’s first name is rather common too, so Bob can become “Bobby”.

Robert was known as “Bobby” when he was young, but he likes to be called “Bob” now because that sounds friendly and casual.
