people

I was born in the U.S. and I have lived for many years in Japan.

There are still many things about Japan that I don’t know and many things I can’t do very well. It is hard for me to give a short answer to the question

“What do you like best about Japan?” My answer is“The people”. In my opinion, Japanese people are honest,

hardworking, intelligent, polite, pleasant, loyal, and interested in improving themselves.

food

There are two Japanese foods that are popular in winter that I wish were more common in the U.S.

One is baked Satsuma potatoes. The other is dried persimmons. Baked Satsuma potatoes don’t need any sweetener or butter. They taste very good and they are good for your health. They can be eaten as a snack on the street or used as a

side dish with a meal.

Dried persimmons are a sweet snack and would easily appeal to Americans.

hard work and discipline

One thing about Japanese people that impresses me is their ability to accept a lot of hard work and discipline from a young age. I think that schools are mainly responsible for this.

I’m an adult, but if you asked me now to live a junior high or high school student and study as long and as seriously as many of them do for their entrance tests, I doubt if I could endure that.
